Chemical leak hits Pasay depot

GMAnews.tv, May 16, 2007

Less than a week after a similar incident hit a Manila campus, a chemical leak marred the operations of liquid substances depot at the busy Malibay district in Pasay City.

Radio station dzBB radio said rescue teams rushed to the Chemwork Inc factory – a structure over half a century old – along De Guzman Street in Malibay.

Fumes spread to nearby homes although no one was reported downed as of posting time.

A rescuer was quoted as saying that a drum in the chemical depot had a hole, causing the liquids to spread.

Authorities from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) dumped sand over the liquids, but have asked for assistance to help contain the leak, the report said.

BFP personnel were putting on protective gear at about 1 p.m. and were preparing to enter the building.

Last May 10, an accident during a "toxicology study" prompted the temporary closure of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine.

UP College of Medicine dean Alberto Roxas told dzRH radio that a small explosion occurred at the third floor of the Salcedo Hall after a chemical container broke.

Roxas admitted that the fumes were very nauseous, prompting school officials to call the fire department. A Makati rescue unit and a Manila Police District (MPD) team rushed to the scene.

The UP Manila incident took place half a year after a chemical spill hit the San Isidro National High School in Makati City, forcing school authorities to suspend classes for several weeks.

Residents around the school were also evacuated for fear that the fumes may affect their health.
