Fire destroyed at least 150 shanties in a squatter's area in Novaliches, Quezon City on Wednesday.

No casualty was reported in the two-hour fire that began at 2:30 p.m. in a shanty in No. 615 Interior Compound in Barangay Bagbag.

Arson investigators said in their initial report that the fire started in a shanty where children were playing with fire.

Firefighters said the flames spread quickly because it was windy. They added that the houses were consumed by flames immediately because the shanties were made of light materials.

Residents, meanwhille, fear that they will no longer be allowed by the landowner to rebuild their homes.

The residents said they have been appealing to the landowner to allow them to buy the land where their homes used to stand. The landowner, however, has declined the offer.
