Mandaluyong - 1,400 families lose homes in predawn Black Saturday fire

GMAnews.tv, April 07, 2007

At least 1,400 families lost their homes after a predawn fire believed caused by a candle that tipped over hit their neighborhood in Mandaluyong City on Saturday.

QTV-11 television reported Saturday noon that the fire started at 2 a.m. but firefighters managed to place it under control only at about 8 a.m.

No one was reported injured in the fire, but firefighters said they had a hard time getting to the area because of narrow roads.

While some residents tried to help firefighters put out the fire, others tried to save their belongings.

Authorities said the families affected by the fire were temporarily sheltered at a nearby elementary school. They said a second elementary school is being considered as a second temporary shelter.

Saturday’s predawn fire was one of at least four fires that hit Metro Manila dueing the Holy Week.

Last Maundy Thursday, a fire damaged seven houses in San Juan, and a second fire believed caused by an unattended stove hit a two-story house in Pasay City, though no one was reported hurt in both incidents.

Fire investigators said the residents of the burned house in San Juan appeared to have gone to the province to spend the Holy Week.

On Good Friday, a predawn fire believed caused by an appliance left plugged in hit an apartment in Cubao, Quezon City. No one was reported injured, but firefighters estimated the damage to property at P100,000.
