Pasig car crash kills teenager, hurts 7 others

ABS-CBNnews.com, March 25, 2007

A car accident near the corner of Circumferential Road-5 and Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig killed a teenager and injured seven others before dawn Sunday.

The fatality was identified as Justin Ong, 18. His residential address was not immediately ascertained by police.

The wounded victims, meanwhile, were named as Cris Anthony Rocamora, 20, a resident of Antipolo City; Xavier del Rosario, 18, of Muntinlupa City; Nicole Verder, 18; Marilyn Ong, 18, from Manila; Rina Lu, 19; Harmay Chua, 19; and Mackhero Okado, 17, from Quezon City.

Police and witnesses said the accident took place at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The victims came from the Eastwood area and were travelling at high speed on the southbound lane when a taxi cut in front of their Toyota Innova car.

Rocamora lost control of the wheel when he veered sharply to the right. The Innova skidded, flipped and slammed onto an electrical post.

Verder's mother, a lawyer identified as Tess Caalim, told ABS-CBN News Sunday morning that Ong died trying to protect her daughter. She said that Ong was courting her daughter.

Police said the fatality was sitting on the rear passenger seat behind Rocamora when the accident happened. They said that Ong shielded Verder with his body when the car crashed.

The crash crushed Ong's skull and broke his bones upon impact.

The other victims, meanwhile, escaped with minor injuries while Verder's mother said she will be needing surgery. They were taken to the Medical City hospital for treatment.

A barangay officer at the scene quoted some of the victims as saying that they came from a birthday party and had consumed some alcohol.
