Pasig - P1M lost in cake factory fire
by Edson C. Tandoc Jr.
Phil. Daily Inquirer, November 23, 2006

MORE than a million pesos worth of property were lost when a huge industrial oven of a cake factory in Pasig City caught fire yesterday morning.

Nobody was hurt but the industrial oven of Regent Company in Barangay Kalawaan being used for round-the-clock operations was damaged, FO1 Salvador Norberte told the Inquirer.

Employees on the morning shift were busy working on the ground floor of the two-story building when they saw that apart from the main burner, other parts inside the oven were already in flames.

They tried to put out the blaze using fire extinguishers but were not apparently able to reach the flames inside the oven. The fire then grew bigger, Norberte said.

Responding firefighters had to destroy the accordion-type door of the building, which also has residential units on the upper floor, to bring the water hoses closer to the burning equipment.

Firefighters, likewise, had a hard time battling the blaze because of the thick smoke that filled the ground floor.

“The fire could raze the entire building if left uncontrolled,” Norberte told the Inquirer in Filipino.

Firefighters managed to place the fire under control after an hour.
