Fire gutted a residential and business area in the central part of the city Tuesday noon leaving at least six families homeless and an estimated P1 million pesos’ worth of properties burned down.
The fire started at around 1:00 p.m. and razed at least six houses and a machine shop along Enverga, Osmeña and Cabana streets two blocks away from the Saint Ferdinand Cathedral. At least three more houses were partially damaged.
One of victims was overheard telling police and firemen that a lighted candle could have started the blaze. According to a group of city social workers who immediately attended to the fire victims, the fire started at the house of one Dalisay Ebarle. A child reportedly lit a candle that could have started the fire.
No casualties were reported by the police as of press time.
Lucena firemen, assisted by volunteer fire fighters from the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, put out the fire after two hours.
