About P20 million was lost when fire gutted one block of the Mabinay public market in Oriental Negros Wednesday night affecting at least 40 stalls.
Mabinay Vice Mayor Janggo Uy told the DAILY STAR that the fire originated from one of the eateries that quickly engulfed the whole block.
Also razed to the ground was the branch office of a motorcycle dealer and several bakeries, initial investigation of the Bureau of Fire Protection revealed further. Investigations further disclosed that the fire was caused by faulty electrical connections.
Responding firetrucks were from the cities of Tanjay and Bais in Oriental Negros and Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental.
Vice Mayor Uy said the 40 affected stalls will be temporarily housed in the vacant stalls of the market, and efforts to reconstruct the structures is now under way.
